A winter in Miami: one level, a heated pool, and the owners on the phone

Miami in the winter is warm by northern standards and cooler than people expect in the water. An unheated pool in January is a nice thing to look at. This one is heated, and so is the spa beside it, which is the difference between a pool you use every day for six weeks and one you use twice.

The garden is the house’s own, not shared and not overlooked, with a barbecue, sun loungers and an umbrella. For a stay measured in weeks rather than nights, that garden is where most of it happens.

Everything is on a single floor. No stairs to a bedroom, no stairs to the garden. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms, so a visit from family partway through your stay does not mean anybody on a sofa: a California king, two queens, and a folding crib if a grandchild is small.

A full kitchen, because six weeks of restaurants is nobody’s idea of a vacation. A washer and dryer in the house. Fast WiFi and a proper desk if you still work some of the time. Air conditioning and heating throughout, both of which get used across a Miami winter.

There is free parking for three cars on the property, which matters if you have driven down I-95 rather than flown. Miami International is twenty minutes and Fort Lauderdale thirty, if somebody is flying in to join you.

One pet can come, approved in advance; tell us the type, breed and age when you ask. There is a modest pet fee. We say one rather than "pet friendly" and leave it vague, because knowing before you book matters more than sounding welcoming.

Biscayne Park is a small village inside Miami, north of the Design District and west of the barrier islands. It is one of the greenest corners of the city, with tropical trees along residential streets and an official status as a bird sanctuary. It is quiet in a way that the beach strips are not.

It is not oceanfront, and it would be easy to imply otherwise. The beach at Surfside is about ten minutes by car, Miami Beach twenty, the Design District nineteen and Wynwood fifteen. If you want to walk out of the house onto sand, this is the wrong house; if you want a garden and a pool with the beach a short drive away, it is the right one.
