New Haven apartments near Yale, eleven minutes from Science Hill

"Near Yale" is not one place. Yale is spread across New Haven, and the walk that matters is the one to the building you actually work in. Mansfield Street sits just off Prospect, at the top of Science Hill, which makes it eleven minutes from Kline Tower at 219 Prospect, where astronomy, mathematics, statistics and data science and part of physics now sit, and the same distance from the Yale Science Building, which holds all of molecular, cellular and developmental biology and part of molecular biophysics and biochemistry.

The three professional schools on this side are the same distance: the Divinity School and the School of the Environment at eleven minutes, the School of Management at twelve. Sterling Library and the Law School are eighteen, and the School of Medicine is thirty-two, which is a bus rather than a walk. If you are at the medical school, this is not the right house, and we would rather say so than waste your afternoon.

There are three apartments, one on each floor, and you rent a whole one. Each has two bedrooms, its own kitchen and its own bathroom, hardwood floors and a smart lock. That is a different proposition from the shared houses most graduate students end up in: no rota, no negotiating with four strangers about the thermostat, and the only person you share the building with is whoever has the floor above.

Cats and dogs are welcome. Yale graduate housing does not take them, which is the single most common reason people end up looking off campus in the first place.

Yale tells its incoming graduate students to look for housing in April, May and June, and to have somewhere by the thirty-first of July, because orientation starts in early August. Its own graduate housing applications open on the second of April. If you are reading this in that window, you are on time; if you are reading it in February, you are early, and early is better, because there are three apartments here and not three hundred.

Leases run to the academic year rather than against it, so the start date lines up with August. If your funding letter has not arrived yet, tell us: that is a normal thing for a first-year to be waiting on and it is not a reason we would turn somebody away.

That also means we are honest about what this is: a well-kept three-family house on a quiet street, not a new building with a gym in the basement. What it has is the walk, the whole apartment, and a landlord who answers.
